Biesse helps Hornets Nest Scouts BSA troop earn robotics merit badge

I think we succeeded in sparking an interest that may be part of these scouts’ lives for a long time to come.

CHARLOTTE, N.C (April 14, 2019) – When nearly two dozen boy scouts from the Hornets Nest District in Charlotte came to Biesse America’s corporate campus on Saturday, they left buzzing about how robotics could play a role in their future career choices. During the hands-on session, led by Biesse Technical Support Specialist John Powers, the scouts learned what they needed to earn 85 % of their robotics merit badge. They left Biesse with a kit to build their own robot at home, after which they will demonstrate it and explain what it does during a troop meeting.

“Robotics are reinventing manufacturing and assembly processes in Charlotte and around the world,” Powers said. “During our session, I explained the different types of robots that are at work in a variety of industries today and how the robotics field plays a role in many 21st Century careers.”

Since Biesse and Intermac machines used in the wood, stone, ceramic and glass industries incorporate robots, the scouts got a real-world view of robotic technology right in the Biesse showroom. They saw firsthand why this automated technology improves how companies make things, adding speed, consistency and safety advantages.

“Judging by the excitement I saw and heard,” Powers said, “I think we succeeded in sparking an interest that may be part of these scouts’ lives for a long time to come.”
